Edna Duarte

Edna was a wife, mother and very attentive daughter in law. Her friends described her as a beautiful and forgiving person. She had three kids that were the center of her life. She worked at ZLB Plasma and was studying to become an x-ray technician. She kept in close contact with her family and always made sure the kids had everything they needed. Edna and her husband had been amicably separated for years. The children were with their father when Edna was seen arguing with a man, not her husband, a few hours before the fire broke out on July 13, 2007.

Edna's employer raised donations for her children and her husband has erected a statue and memorial garden on the lot where the family's house once stood. Members of the community also had a float in the annual St. Patrick's Day parade with a picture of Edna and other members of the community recently killed and chanted "Stop the Violence".

Sergio Jimenez Martinez

Sergio, his brother and sister all left Oaxaca, Mexico to find work to help support their father who had grown too old to work.  In addition to helping support his father, he also had a new wife and child.  Sergio went first to Missouri and then eventually came to Davenport, Iowa where he found work at Los Agaves restaurant. His co-workers described him as polite, helpful and down to earth.

November 15, 2009, Sergio and two other co-workers were at Dell’s in The District in Rock Island, Illinois at 2:55 am when an argument broke out and spilled out into the parking lot.  Officers on patrol in the area heard gun shots and responded.  When they arrived there was a crowd of more than 100 people.  Sergio died from a fatal gunshot wound.   Police received an enhanced surveillance video that shows additional witnesses as recently as 03/06/2010.  Sergio was a good son and was trying to help support his family by coming to Davenport to work.  To quote Detective Scott Williams, “Sergio’s death was senseless, the very least we owe him is an arrest.”  Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 cash if information leads to an arrest.  The Tip line phone number is (309) 762-9500.
